Errata

Into each life some rain must fall, and into each book, it seems, some errors must hide until they are immortalised in print. I am not a great proof reader of my own work, as the following list will show.

In Veni Vadi Vici, the following errors are present in the first printing. They will be corrected when we have accumulated all the typos. (Pagination is the same in both hardback and paperback.) If you find some not listed here, please let me know, by email or on FB!

p48-49
The stanza beginning “Control him and grasp the grip of his sword…” is switched with the stanza beginning “And the point will find an open way…” in the translation. The transcription is in the correct order.
p71
Chapter 8 fol 10V
there are some lines missing from the end of the chapter, so insert after last line printed:
Non perder tenpo adinparare unora.
Itenpi grandi con la man serena.
Te pone sopra glialtri et site honora.
Rompe ogni guarda che fatta terena.
Guardie terrene aspectan picol carcho.
E sile grave passan senza pena.Arma greve non passa presto al varcho.
La leve va et ven como frezza in larcho.Do not lose a single hour of learning.
The great blows with a serene hand,
Will place you above the others and give you honour.Break all low guards
Low guards await small loads,
And so heavy ones pass without difficulty.Heavy arms do not go quickly to the step,
Light ones go and come like an arrow in a bow.p77

chapter title in right column: “Discussion” should be “Ordering”

p100 numbering of list should start at 1, not 6.
p101 Chapter heading “Theory of the sword…” should be “Principles of the sword…”
Chapter 15, Folio 14 R, 3rd stanza
there is a line missing, here in bold:

Piglia questo che untracto di stadera.
Se stara el compagno in porta di ferro.
Questo nel cor te serro.
Fa che tu sia in posta sagitaria.
Grasp this, that is a steelyard’s trace,
That if the companion is in the iron door guard,
Lock this into your heart,
You should be in the archer’s guard,
p131
The 8th play of the sword has the image from the 9th: the correct image is here:
8thplay
p133
last paragraph: line “You are applying sufficient pressure in the crossing to open your inside line, to which the player responds by entering in with a pommel strike.”
should read: “You are applying sufficient pressure in the crossing to open your outside line, to which the player responds by entering in with a pommel strike.”
p162
This page is missing one image, and has one misplaced.
The image of the stab to the hand belongs with the text above it (questa ponta…), not with  questa coverta…
The first image on 30v is missing, it is this one:
30v - top figure
The translation and commentary are all in place.
p166-167: the images for the second play on fol 32V and the first on fol 33V have been switched around.
This one belongs on p 166, with the text:

Per lo modo chio to preso non dubito

Tv anderai in terra dico subito.

From the way I have grabbed you I do not doubt

That you’ll go to the ground, I say immediately!

This is a variant on Fiore’s seventh play of the first master. Here we grab his throat instead of wrap an arm round his neck.

And this one belongs on p.167 with the text

Io vedo questo gioco non me falla.
CHio rompa el bracio sopra la mia spalla.

I see that this play will not fail me.
As I break you arm over my shoulder.

This is just like Fiore’s 16th play of the first master.

p190 line 8 right column: Dan Sellars is credited twice. I'm sure he deserves it, but it is a duplicate (he's already on the previous page).
p190 line 12 left column: Anders Malmsten (should be capitalised). I noticed this one at the moment that I gave him his copy in the salle!
